We have all sorts of stories about Carlile House, all of which are anecdotal.
What we do know.
Names: Carlile House
Address 90-94 Richmond Road
Ponsonby, Auckland.

When built it was a Children's home.
There was supposed to be a fire in which a number of children were killed.
The ghost stories emanate from this. We are still looking for the whole story.

The building is currently owned or operated by the Tongan Church????

Some comments on the photographs.

You might well be right, but in the circled area there seems to be the face of a woman. Could be peeling paint or paredolia, but ghosts have very unusual ways of appearing to us. Or letting us know they are there.

I went with some friends to check out this house also. Unfortunately, there was some kind of church service at the time (at 2 or 3 in the morning!!!) and we were hesitant to take photographs.

Story Title carlile house 3rd(ponsonby)

I have been in the carlile house many many times. To me and my mates,we know there are many presence at carlile house (ponsonby) to be honest with you she's really a good ladie, see my storie is that i play (ram)real-action-maker,for those who dont know its PAINTBALL,WE used to train in that house ever friday night and day time saturdays.but for my first time there no one told us it was haunted. It sure did looked the part but to my eyes it was GAME ON...hehehe things started strangely to me cause of wut happen in side that place, one nite we had a game and we had a mission and i was the hostage that needed to be recued by team members.i had a marked point to where i was to placed and i had to stay there in the top floor.the door was closed and i and to stay quiet. as soon as i was placed in the room i felt a presence staraight away and i felt uneasy being left alone there.i didnt have the shivers but felt i was being watched. i happened to look where i could feel this thing staring at me in the dark and i saw a tall ladys figure cleary on my right-hand side of me. for some reason i looked up wards adn there was an attic and it looked like a child starring down at me.i was freaked by that and i closed my eyes 4 ten seconds and when i looked again the child was still looking at me so i pursivied with these images through out the game untill i heard my team mates at the stair case and i was recued. My sargent told us after the senario was completed that a nun haunted this place and that she hung herself in the house...... there was 1 time my girlfriend came along with me 1 nite 2 a game and she said she saw 2 figures of boys running across the other side of the room where she was sitting and it looked as tho they were on the outside of the building. she actually thought it was some of my mates training. but when she asked me and pointed to where she saw them, i said there no way any one could have been out there cause theres no railing for any one climb on or walk across. my girlfreind thought she was imaging this image she saw but some one else who was in the room witnessed it aswell. it was very hard to explain how any one could have got there.i have many more stories about that house .thanx for reading....

Story Title Carlile House PT 3

Since reading about Carlile House several months back the place is certainly supernatural. About two months back I was driving along Richmond Road in Posonby when I came across the place. Being the type to investigate based on inconclusive results I got out and walked around the house. When I came around the back of the house where their is a narrow path leading up to the back door, I hear children playing quite clearly. This first thing that came into my head was the story of the neighbours hearing the same thing so I moved towards the house in which I thought the sound to be coming from. Soon as I got closer it stopped which I thought nothing much of it at first and returned back to my spot from which it started and it returned. Not wanting to make an ass out of myself I explored all reasonable explanations and laughed thinking how cool this was! Going up to the back entrance was airy as! Although the place is old and burnt the feeling that a presence was their was unbelievable. So I tried talking to the presence. Moments after the door tapped on it own (no wind that day and well sheltered in the narrow path leading up to the door) After laughing again which wasn't the best idea, I turned to walk away and hear a voice from behind me saying "Come In" after I turned around I said no thanks - but I'll be back.

Anyway, there was certainly a presence there that day and I plan to go back for a more closer inspection.

Iam looking for an open minded team of 3 others and myself to investigate further.

email me if you are keen to explore the outside boundary's of the supernatural.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi guys,

My name is Peter and I wrote the experience that I had a few months back.

I have just signed in to the forum and joined the community - thanks again for your email Dorothy :)

Dorothy sent me an email of a gathering of interested people wanting to check the place out once and for all and see what happens.... I said that I would be back and won't want to dispoint the ?????? it was.

My email is: melco@kol.co.nz

Anyway, was just having a quick read of comments made by others.

Carlile house is the place on Richmond Road and connected to the tongan church and owned by the tongan people.

After intensive searches archives have told me that A/ Was a Orphanage was back when .... (from memory, their is a date on the roof as you walk along the back enterence and down the side) B/ Some internet search told me that there was a serious fire and many perished. C/ I went back there the other day on a Sunday when the Tongan people (lovely people :)had just come out of the church and spoke freely with them about a strange happening that I experienced. The skeptics were there however, other more quiet people reported strange happenings when they had been there to drop things off inside. 6 sincere people in total! Interesting eh? And warned of strange noises, being tauched, foot steps on the upper level and of course the sound of children playing. My profession steers me in the diection of professionalism, honesty and the open minded.

There is deffinently more about the place than meet the eye and I would also love to hear more from some of you.

finaly, and heres food for thought that got me so intreged in the first place.
About maybe two possibely 3 years ago I was reading a council report on the internet or something that listed a varity of problems when the pllace was either going to be pulled down or have major renavoitations done to it. The report gave a list of weird things including the failure of machinary that keep failing when work was trying to be done on it. Iam in the construction industry and thought that someone was taking the P.

Hope that someone else has read this report or council article and can share there opinion on the matter.

I am very keen on putting together a small friendly team to investigate haunted sites mostly in Aucklad in the New Year when I return to NZ from holiday on the 20th January 07, to learn more of the paranormal and the spirits around us and at the same time, treat it with respect.

For personal reasons involving my late mother I am on this quest.

Thanks guys,

Open minded - Pete - Ghost hunter :)

Well I found Carlile House, nestled next to the Tongan Church in Ponsonby. It was about 7pm at night but not really dark, I just wanted to check the place out in the daylight before attempting anything at night.

The house itself is an absolute gem of a place worthy of a haunting in its own right. All that aside I do belive there is a 'presence there'. I feel the presence of a Nurse type figure and that of about 3 to 4 children all of different ages. I describe the Woman as a nurse because that is the feeling I get from her. She is close to the children and cares for them but is not related to them.

The place is fire damaged and is is possible that the lady and children perished in the fire. I saw images of the Lady in a nightgown caring for some of the children who seem really ill. I wasnt able to tell the fate of them.

When I first got there I could distinctly hear the sounds of children playing and a young baby crying. The sounds seemed to be coming from inside the house. I had a look for the source but as I aproaced the house the noises stopped. I walked around the side by the church and there were small children playing in the carpark so it is possible that the sound carried, however I didnt hear the noise again at the same spot.

I wasnt able to gain access to the inside of the house but gained a good prospective of the lower floor from looking in the windows.

I do feel that the Lady was keeping an eye on me the whole time and was watching me from the top floor.

While I was out the from taking pictures a man turned up with a camera taking photos, he went around the side for a few minutes then left at a brisk pase, prehaps he felt uneasy.

Thats all I have to report this time, I am going to write to the tongan church asking to gain access to the interior for a better look.

I will post photos soon.

-Sam

Story Title Carlile House

I HAVE BEEN INSIDE CARLILE HOUSE. It's not that spooky, it would've been a beautiful house.
A Tongan Church own it, it's open every Saturday. They only use the bottom level, for storing things as well as selling them.
The top is used for filming horror movies a lot? And apparently lots of people ask to take photos of it.
The neighbours are full of it. The probably just want it demolished, it would be easy for squatters to get in and they probably don't like that...so yeah.
Children are always outside running around, PLAYING and LAUGHING. They know how to get in, as all the windows are either open or smashed, so it was probably just them when the neighbours heard the noises. I went there one time, when the front door was locked, and they showed me how I could get in.
Inside, there's no sign of a fire, so i don't believe the whole "orphanage burnt down and all the kids died" thing.

I have just done a day dime reki of Carlilie House, The date above the top right window (before going down the drive) is 1886.It is a shame to see such a beautiful haunt going to such disrepair. I too am very interested in the results of activities felt/observed, I am also interested in any more local area haunts if anyone can help me.
Thanx

Thanks for that Caroline.

Any chance of you getting piccies if you do another drive by. Im particularly interested in any pictures of this building, as there is some confusion regarding its 'actual' situation.

Cheers.

We discussed this with GG and we think any records might not be as C House, they might be listed under the original church or other admin of the buildings group, because C House has no records its seems. Perhaps someone could come up with a suggestion as to what the umbrella might be that was the original land owner ? Anything visable ?

The mystery of the haunted building that wasnt and isnt on record, least of all the multiple child deaths by fire either.. that could be an urban myth.

If anyone is near the Krd business assoc, (Samoa House Krd) drop in to make contact with Edward Bennett, historian. He works out of there and knows EVERYTHING about the area.

I put my camera in my bag on friday, "just incase", but not really with the intention of going there as I had other errands to run, but as fate would have it, I ended up out the front of Carlile House, to find the front doors open, & a sign advertising art for sale. (come on in!)
I snapped a few pics out front & entered the building, I took a few steps in & immediatly felt a heavyness on my chest & became very concious of breathing, or trying to get breath,( I felt this was more the imprint in the house rather than a ghost host), this feeling stayed withme for the entire time I was there.
I called out once inside, (& had 2 small children with me) so we were not being quiet, but noone answered. I went around to my left & photographed the stairwell[/img]Image
I continued to walk around, & found a room with junk & a long corridor, I was intrigued to go further, but felt disrespctful for doing so, so I turned around, to come back the way I'd come in, I noticed evidence of a more recent fire, to the right just past the doorway, & then I heard ladies voices coming from a craft room.
I told the ladies I was there to look at the craft & my ulterior motive was to look at the beautiful house & could did they know anything more of its history, one lady did.
Prior to the church owning it, the Salvation Army owned it, & prior to that it had indeed been an orphanage for children, I asked her if the buildings out the back were part of the original structure (as it looks different to the front facade, & is very long) she said it is all original 1886, & that it was a school as well as an orphanage.
She told me there was also a fire there in dec of last year, as I asked about the fire damage, & if I could go upstairs to have a look, but they deemed it too unsafe (a word of warning to others investigating)
So, somewhere to start looking is for any original schools in the area, or the Salvation Army, not sure if we would get that kind of info, but I will definatly see what I can find out.

Great job Caroline, you have done more in a few days than most of us have in 2 years.
Thank-you for the time and effort.
The photographs are fantastic, and I have to admit it's an unhappy place.
The sign by the door "Tongan Arts & crafts" is anything but welcoming. The fact that you went into that dark abyss with small children is to be applauded, I don't think I would have.
I will put a couple of the photographs on the main web-site with your findings. I'm sure we can drum up enough interest to get an investigation together.

Thanx Grey Ghost,
I was a little aprehensive about taking the kids in there, (but then again kids "see" kids sometimes), but I knew with my instinct or sensitivities if I felt anything I would just get the hell out. I kept asking my little boy if he was alright (which he was), & like I said, stopped at a certain point as if it was a no-go / disrespectful to go any further, if it was just me, I would have probably carried on. It felt quite calm when we were in there, but I really wanted to go upstairs where I think it might feel abit different. My boy was used to driving around in the haunted hearse I used to drive, hes been well protected since inutero, lol.

Well it would seem I cant keep away!!!!
I was driving in the neighbourhood, & thought I would take a look from the other side (dickens st), I noticed wording on the outside of the building, so I pulled into the car park behind the church.
This I think would have actually been the main entrance when there was kids there, but a toilet block has been built infront of it. It is a large pale brick structure, & up on the top storey reads "DEO JUVANTE" which is latin for "with god's help" & on the lower storey in large letters is "CHILDRENS HOME 1910", so this possibly changes course for us again, perhaps Carlile house was the first buit (as it is very different in apperance from the outside) & this is possibly an add on after.
I have had a quick look on the net to see if I can find any schools/childrens homes listed, but the most I have come up with at this stage is back then childrens homes were different from orphanages, anything else I have found for that era seems to be pointing to church groups, so it will probably be under that umbrella.
I will keep looking, as now I am growing a slight obsession as it just seems to be getting more interesting & challenging.

You keep going Batwitch, you're getting great results.
By the way do you still have a photograph of "Elvira"?

Sorry all, I have been massivly side tracked, ( & finding time around 2 small children) so things have come to a grinding halt, but that is not to say I wont be resuming my enquires, I will go & find Edward Bennett in the next couple of weeks, as my searches on the internet have not yeilded any more info as to what church umbrella Carlile house may have been under......... so we'll see what comes up.

Hi all im not a newbie but i haven't been in here for ages and had to re-register again cos i can't even remember my username letalone my pw anyways good to be back...:D ... i just wanted to say that me and my friend constantly went there late at night on a saturday or sunday but there was always something going on at the tongan church, we took so many pictures and caught so many orbs which was freaky, we even walked up the stairs at the side of the house and i caught a moving orb thru one of the windows, it does have an eerie presence to the place but it maybe because the state of it, a few young guys caught me and my friend there one night taking pic's so we asked them if they had heard of any unusual stories and it was the same story that i've heard from others and what everyone's saying in here. It would be awesome to even do a vigil in there, im sure the tongan church wouldn't mind, even if a little donation was given over  ... it's a shame they haven't bothered to do up the place it is such a beautiful part of History for Auckland. That's all but i'll go thru my pics and post em up for you all to see if anyone's interested :D ... thank you!
