Australian cryptozoologist Rex Gilroy, who has investigated the chances of both the Moa and Moehau Man still existing in New Zealand before, is asking for help from Northern Wellingtonians.

In the Petone Herald has run a story asking for users of the Rimutaka Ranges to report anything that could lead to sightings of the Small Scrub Moa reportedly having been seen in the area. Mr Gilroy has previously tried invoking local interests to try to find Moa in the Urewera mountain ranges.

The Petone Herald called the Department of Conservation to find its view on roaming Rimataka moa but we were told its rangers were out in the field and unavailable.

I've actually just done a search, and the Gilroys have been very active in searching for the Moa in NZ. Seems they've been involved in trips to the far north, the Urewera's and down south. There are numerous news links to their 'Moa Hunting' activities, some are here:

What do you rekon though? do they still exist? Are there areas in NZ that are un-explored enough to hide a bird of its size for so many years?

I'd like to think they still exist and that there are areas here that are left untouched.
To be honest though, if they do exist I wouldnt want them to be found, as they obviously dont want to be found

I agree - finding them would be fantastic and sad at the same time.

Im not so sure about the Rimutakas - they are so well used. Waiopehu Forest up northland - maybe - down Fiordland - that would be my pick if they were going to be anywhere.

I know the Takahe was rediscovered - and if anything I think it would be a Takahe sized moa species that survived - although finding a two metre one would be nice (and sad) lol

Its all so confusing lol
