Many years ago we used to visit my Auntie in Christchurch
She lived in Northcote/Papanui.
Anyway next door to my Aunties house was this Brick house, I never saw
the lady who owned it however she had a young daughter and a dog named George.
Every year we visited George would dig a whole under the fence and come on to my auntie's proprerty, I never made the connection at the time, but it was like the dog knew we were comming and was trying to escape the other property.
At the time, we did not know that the lady that owned the brick house had
had several conversations about wierd things happening in her house, with my Auntie.
Out of pure curiosity one day I decided to go and have a look at this neighbours house, It was your normal garden viriety New Zealand house
With a front path leading to the front door, no fence at the front only fenced on the sides and at the back, it was made of red brick, as soon as you looked at the house, you could tell there was something not right, I was young at the time and could not put my finger on it, apart from to say it looked very unfriendly uninviting, I would never have gone into that house.
Anyway. My Auntie told me to go and fill in all the holes that george had made.
This I did, packed it real hard to make sure George could not dig it up again.
But sure enough next moring there was George waiting for me to come out
and say my morning hello to him and give him a pat.
For four years when we made the trip from Wellington to visit my Aunitie in Chistchurch, George would always be there.
On the fifth year sure enough there was George, only later on
my Auntie said to me, Well you won't have to cover up George's holes this trip, I said what do you mean, she said he had been run over by a car that October I sai to her thats wierd, can I show you something she sure, I sais come outside with me, we went out the back of the house and sure enough there was george, I looked at my Auntie, She did not look so good,
she bent down to pat the dog sure enough he was real, she did not look impressed, that was the last time i ever saw George, yet everytime I went back to my Aunties place His presence could always be felt by the fence
and there was always a fresh hole dug.
I still don't understand this. till this day.
It's now been many years since I last visited Christchurch, my auntie has since moved, but none has been able to explain about George.

yeah it was pretty weird, later on Iheard some stories about what happened to George's owner in that house.
I think it was a presence of some sought.
kind of annoyed now that i never had the guts at the time,
to go into that house.
It is interesting though that the council or whoever changed the streetname
a few years later down the track, I wonder why.

Samsara
That is a weird story, do you know what the street was called? I used to live in Papanui a few years ago.

bit rough round thememory area, ahh, it was called godley ave or place
anyway it definately had the word god in it. the council or whoever changed the name I can't remmember what to, however it used run off the main drag
and just down the road their was a college or school not sure but I think it was called St Beads or something like that.

I have always thought there was something spiritual about dogs, or at least some of them, I do at times feel the presense of dogs of mine long gone.

Saint Patricks day last year, was one of the saddest days of my life. We had to say goodbye to a much loved pet Cocoa, she was 16 and very ill, she had reached the end.
She hasn't gone far... I can close my eyes and see her anytime. When I look at the other dogs, there she is, in the middle laying down the law. I'll get older and she'll get older with me. Just like all the other pets that have gone there's a little bit of my heart that will always be just theirs.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of Heaven
is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been
especially close to someone here,
that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills
for all of our special friends
so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine
and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old
are restored to health and vigor;
those who were hurt or maimed
are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them
in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content,
except for one small thing:
they each miss someone very special,
someone who was left behind.

They all run and play together,
but the day comes when one
suddenly stops and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent;
his eager body begins to quiver.
Suddenly, he breaks from the group,
flying over the green grass, faster and faster.

You have been spotted,
and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion,
never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face;
your hands again caress the beloved head,
and you look once more into those trusting eyes,
so long gone from your life,
but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...

I know where you are talking about.. I used to live in Dormer St which is off the main drag too up from Northlands. Bizzare how they changed the street name, I'm sure they dont do that unless its an extreme situation.

Greyghost - I have seen that poem quoted before on sites relating to the death of pets and it always brings a lump to my throat. I still miss my dog I grew up with until I was 16, she was the coolest dog.. she used to go down the slide at the park on her bum and if mum didn't know where I was she'd just ask Sheba to find me and she always did

Thats what i found weird about george, He was not my pet, yet somehow we had an attachment which I am just unable to explain.

I was young at the time so didn't take as much notice of things as I should have, unless
I considered them to be unusual, Like that they had two bus company's you could catch a council bus or one from the other company (can't remember it's name now)
But back then In wellington you had the council buses, unless you lived further out, then you had different companies but not in the city.
I had a habit of reading the paper at the time and I remember there was a dairy on the main drag that sold The Dominion, The evenng post , the local Christchurch papers
plus the wiarapapa Times, I remember that being one of the most impressive things about Christchurch at the time.

We used to have a dog called Bonnie, she got old and fat, and we treated her like a daughter, In her last few years, we found out she really had us round her little finger, she could always give you a certain look, that made you melt and before you knew it, you were sharing your dinner or accidentally dropping a sausage of the BBQ on purpose. In the winter, we would light the fire and she would appear from no where and lay right in front of it, so close you would swear she would go up in flames. She used to stretch right out, with one back leg tucked under her, the other stretched out behind her. We had her cremated and she sits in our bedroom, still sleeping in our room every night. We have never brought ourselves to get another dog, but when we had kids, we decided our son needs a pet of some description, we got a little tabby kitten, which has grown with our son and they are the best of friends. The funny thing is when we light a fire or use the gas heater, the cat gets in really close, stretches out with one leg tucked under, and one leg stretched out behind her.

Samsara

Haybales - That's a lovely story The dog I mentioned in a previous post Sheba used to have a really lovely relationship with a couple of our cats. If it was raining and the cats were wet she'd lick them dry and then they'd lie in front of the fire togethor, so cute.
