 Post subject: Sitting With Dorothy
PostPosted: Sat Feb 09, 2008 10:51 pm
In the Odd Fellows Cemetery, on Union Street in Milton, Delaware.
On the front row, the last gravesite headed toward town, is that of a lady named Dorothy. In front of her headstone is a marble bench engraved with the words "Come sit with Dorothy" I thought this was so weird when I first saw it so I did just that, I sat with Dorothy.
My friend Megan and I used to walk a lot, all over town, and one afternoon passing the cemetery, we noticed Dorothy's grave....being tired anyway, I couldn't resist the invitation to sit and so I did. I introduced myself to Dorothy and thanked her for the invitation to sit, stating that I was hot and tired and happy to take a seat. That's when the breeze picked up....moments ago it was 90 some odd summer time degrees and suddenly now it felt much cooler. Megan sat down on the grass beside the bench enjoying the cooler air.
I noticed the flowers at the grave were plastic and I told Dorothy that for letting us enjoy her company we would bring her fresh flowers and the scent of lilacs became so heavy it was as if we were in a lilac bush. I said that I love lilacs and it just so happened we had a huge lilac bush at my house and I would bring her some that evening. Megan and I went on home and to my amazement there were lilacs from the bush laying on my bed. I didn't think too much of it at the time, just put them in a vase and went on with my business.
That evening after dinner, I asked Megan if she'd like to go back and give the lilacs to Dorothy with me but she didn't feel up to it so off I went. When I got there, there was a lilac on the bench and it was then that it hit me....I think Dorothy had placed the lilacs on my bed to remind me of my promise. For the rest of the season that the bush would bloom I would take lilacs to Dorothy's grave and sit with her for a little while, the breeze always felt so nice.
I don't think I was the only one who visited with Dorothy and I had the feeling that she was there. It wasn't long after the first time I noticed the bench that it had been turned around so the invitation no longer faced the street....perhaps someone sat with Dorothy and got freaked out when they realized that indeed Dorothy was sitting there with them.
Mary,
Harvestmom.
