I noticed them yesterday. And the building does indeed look rather unsafe.

One good sneeze and the ceiling may fall down. :P

In the fourth photo, on the upper inner left corner of the window frame, you'd think there was the upper half of a face there. But I suspect that it's the pattern from the windows at the back, lighting and peeling paint/paper.

Well so far I managed to dig up some info from some heritage archives and it talks in great detail about the history of the house originally called the 'Costley Training Institute' a school for troubled boys. It was built in 1886, and in 1909 Sister Cecil's childrens home moved from Parnell to the house. While the orphanage was there Sister Cecil passed away from an illness (most likely at the house) but it has no mention of a fire during the time it was an orphanage and that all the children were relocated to another house in Takapuna in 1930. Although in 1973 it was temporarily an 'alternative school' and a fire did occur but no one was home when it happened... in 1976 the property was sold to the Tongan church..

I am still trying to scrape up more info - like Auckland fire records to make sure this is all accurate.. anyhow I am hoping to stop by the arts and crafts stalls there this weekend and talk to the church people..

Hi, I'm a newbie :-)
I looked up google street for this address (90-94 Richmond Road, Auckland) I'm not sure if it's my server, the way the page has loaded or my overactive and optimistic imagination but if you click the street arrows down to number 86 Richmond Road, (also Carlisle House) there is a silver ford parked on the street, behind it a tree leaning to the right and behind that a mist??!
Or is it just me? [/url]

I would say its a little glitch, it does look like something most people would take a second look at though.

Thanks Karori, Jay.

Ah, the joy of wishful thinking, was nice while it lasted. One of these days I'll find one for real!

It looks like the glare from the sun shining on the paint on the house. Or it maybe a reflection of the car paint on the house,or if you know what season it was when the photo was taken. If it was winter it is more likely to be the morning dew evaporating in the heat of the sun.

thanks taye
P.s. welcome to this forum Karori

I love this building! I was in the area today working and I managed to get a good look at it from the outside and it really is a beautiful building, in its own unique way. What a shame it is just sitting there like that it is just begging for more life in it. The child energy and history is very strong.

That is a lovely property. I wonder if it has developed its reputation due mainly to the masses of children past and present who have maintained their own mythology about the place? I met several kids from the church behind the house and they all had their version of the "ghost" although noone had seen it or knew anyone who had seen it. They simply had heard of it and it became a certainty for them.

:D I found an old photo of Carlile House from when it was first built. My best friend and I are big fans of this building and are currently doing alot of research on its origins. I was going to post up the photo I found but im not too sure how to as this is the first time I've been on these forums?
